What is better: Acyclovir or Zovirax? Part 2 – Acyclovir

Acyclovir: Instructions for Use

Acyclovir has an affordable price. It is manufactured in several forms: tablets, 5% cream, and 3% ophthalmic ointment. Acyclovir is not recommended for children younger than three years.

Zovirax from $0.68

Doctors prescribe Acyclovir to adult patients in an amount of 200 mg taken every 4 hours. In severe cases, a single dose can be doubled. It is recommended to start treatment with the onset of the first symptoms for prevention of break outs and faster recovery.

The Acyclovir ointment is used on the affected area in a small amount up to 5 times a day. The course of therapy should not exceed ten days. It can be prescribed to young children with caution and only in severe cases. As a rule, doctors recommend using Acyclovir ointment for singular and uncomplicated herpetic reaction to minimize a risk of side effects.

Acyclovir can be prescribed to children but for no longer than five days. Otherwise, the body can develop tolerance to the drug, and if the disease recurs, the medication might not be effective.

Should patients be prescribed Acyclovir or Zovirax?

Both medicines contain Acyclovir as an active ingredient to treat and prevent the appearance of herpetic vesicles, reduce the risk of complications, accelerate healing and recovery. Both drugs proved to be highly effective in the treatment of shingles caused by herpes zoster.

Both Acyclovir and Zovirax are prescribed to children with chickenpox to speed up the recovery and to prevent complications. The medicine blocks the reproduction of the virus and prevents it from spreading to other organs.

Acyclovir and Zovirax provide pain relief and treat inflammation, significantly reducing the number of breakouts, lesions and rash on the skin.

The medicine should be used under the supervision of a doctor for dehydrated patients, patients with kidney diseases and diseases of the nervous system. The medication should not be used if a patient has an allergy to any of the components.

In case of overdose the following side effects can be observed in patients: nausea, anemia; vomiting, rash, jaundice; drowsiness, diarrhea, dizziness, urticaria, fatigue, itching.

It is not a secret that the immune system of a pregnant woman is fragile and often they suffer from herpes. Doctors prescribe Acyclovir and Zovirax in such cases after careful consideration of health benefits to the woman and harm to the baby.

However, the drugs are not recommended for pregnant women because of a high risk of the following undesirable consequences: abdominal pain; allergic reaction; insomnia; indigestion, dizziness and headache.

If the treatment with antiviral medicine is required for pregnant women, it is more often recommended to use Zovirax because it has a lower risk of adverse reaction in a woman and development of the fetus.

Choice of Medication

Experts recommend choosing Zovirax because it has a better manufacturing process with several stages of purification of the active substance. It makes Zovirax more efficient and safer because it does not contain additional elements.

Doctors and patients also noticed that Zovirax cream and ointment better sticks to the skin and remains in the affected areas longer to ensure better absorption. It is safe for pregnant women and newborn babies only after consulting a doctor.

If the price of this drug seems too high for you, you can replace it with Acyclovir. However, according to the doctors, such replacement is not always appropriate and efficient.

In any case, it is necessary to use antiviral medicine with acyclovir for treatment of herpes lesions that cause burning, tingling and itching. Acyclovir blocks the virus and helps a body to recover faster. If taken as a prophylactic measure, the medicine will prevent herpes from reoccurring.
